1st Year Analyst Hours
Hi all, wanted to check in with the first years. I am an incoming first-year at a MM bank and wanted to check in with what to expect. Have never worked in the industry before and truly do not know what to expect in terms of an average schedule. Have scanned the forum and read the horror stories, but after talking with other folks, it looks like the hours aren't as bad as what they seem and maybe that is a function of a good team and maybe deal flow?
Is a 9am-11pm Mon-Thursday, 9a-7pm Friday and a few hours Sunday night pretty standard for a coverage group and is it typically a straight grind the entire time? With this type of schedule looks like you can still lead a pretty normal life outside of Monday-Thursday. I'm sure there are weeks where you're getting crushed and some that might be a bit lighter, but was curious as to what the average schedule looks like and if most of the times you're on call you're just sending emails/updating a tracker or if you're cranking a deck daily.
Is the stress/lack of sleep really as bad as it's made out to be on here or are the people that complain/leave/realize it's too much just one-off cases?
Really depends on the group but in my case: 9am-1am Mon-Thursday, 9am-10pm Friday and 10am-11pm Sunday
9am-1am M-T
9am-7pm Fri
11am-7pm Sun. Very variable
Are you usually working on a deliverable the whole time especially on the Sunday/late on weekdays or are you just on call/responding to emails?
Sundays are most variable. I normally try to grind stuff out in the morning and then I send off and wait on comments for a bit.
I’m by no means parked at my desk glued to my computer all day.
Sunday is pretty much a full work day.
If you’re lucky you’ll work 40-60 hrs most weeks. If you’re unlucky 80-100. It varies a lot lol
Anyone else?
Has work load come down with the decrease in market activity?
