you can get a place for $1200/$1400, with a roommate with a separate room. Your room is just going to be very small (think 8x10).

 

You could probably live in like Washington Heights (190s to 200s) and get a decent 1bedroom for about $1300. But otherwise, you'll need a roommate. Or try brooklyn.

By the way, craigslist is your friend.

These two places are closer to wall street district than some midtown or uptown apts.. and cheaper.. also.. a lot of young ppl working in the financial district live there..
