From my understanding, the old way was that analysts who wanted to move on up to Associate would stay a 3rd year, but now things have changed. I think some banks offer a "fast track" to associate, where you only have to do 2 years as an analyst. This is to encourage analysts to stay rather than leave. But I think you answered your question already, it varies by bank.

Some banks have 3 year analyst programs and some have 2 year programs. Varies by firm.

DB has a 2 year program. Buddy at GS also said it's 2 years
BofA also 2 years but depends on performance, as in time could be longer or shorter. Current Associate on my team was made Associate after 16 months due to being stellar.
