cabonabo, I suggest you make some friends atypical of what you may have now. You'll quickly realize that simply going to Stern qualifies you for more opportunities than many people will see in their entire life.

And yeah a 3.6 is fine.

in it 2 win it

Agreed. Plenty of people get interviews with sub-3.5 GPAs.

Also, Stern is a banker factory.

This WAS true for recruiting 2009-2010 for semitargets/targets like Stern / Ross / etc, But people ive been talking to now are saying 3.75-3.8+, like the guy above me says.

Always wondered why Stern is such a strong target for IBD when NYU is not a "top" school in terms of ranking such as US News, etc. Not as good as schools like Notre Dame but gets better IBD recruiting...is this due to Stern being much better than the university plus proximity to the street?

proximity to the street.

Plus renowned finance program/solid professors

Energy is a tough business to get into but a school like UniversityofHouston places quite well into it. Big school with a lot subpar students but also many overachievers....slim pickings but most majors come in and recruit for their commercial/finance orgz there.

Not saying UH=NYU but proximity is HUGE, especially in industry leading cities such as Hou (energy) and NYC.

Ive talked to multiple Stern kids who all say it's very tough to get a good BB job with an ok GPA, and that the kids who get GS or JPM really have 3.8+. This whole all you need is a 3.5 thing is very detrimental to students, if you have a 3.5 you're not getting a good BB job without A LOT of luck and connections unless you're at Harvard or Wharton or you play a varsity spkty

Call me crazy, but I have actually noticed the reverse being true. Being a graduating senior at NYU Stern, I have noticed the kids with 3.1-3.5 GPAs getting internships at the top BB much more than the kids with 3.6+ (and don't get me wrong, I'm in the 3.6+ category). I think sociability and humility are key. You want to come off as someone that would be pleasant to work with and definitely don't come off as a know-it-all (the latter being a major complaint I hear from recruiters all the time).

Just to add, after getting an interview GPA doesn't really matter. Not to mention the kids with
