I don't think any of you answered the question. Of course people turn down GS. The question was, given their special place in the hearts (and souls) of Americans, would any of you who work there (or if you don't, hypothetically) deny that you work there (say, when asked where you work).

I know at least one former GS employee who has gone in to lobbying and whose GS stint does not appear on their resume.

I doubt I'd deny I worked there if questioned, but in certain contexts I do make a habit of avoiding mentioning that I work in the industry - it's just not worth the hassle.

Just curious, when do you avoid mentioning that you work in investment banking when asked?

Generally, if I'm talking to someone I don't care about and am not planning on seeing again/having any sort of relationship beyond customer + barrista with, it's just not worth the hassle of having them offer me their opinion on something they are completely unqualified to opine on. My time's more valuable than that shit; I don't tell them how to make my coffee, even if Starbuck is lousy (not to single out barristas, just an example, and not a good one at that).

There's nothing wrong with saying you work in business and leaving it at that.

I would be more embarassed to tell people I worked for Arthur Anderson, Enron or one of those Forex JT Marlon chop shops. I would never leave Investment Banking off my resume. Ignorant, clueless people may see us as the devil. But educated hiring managers know that Investment Banking employee = results driven, hard working and excellent client interaction skills.
