Advice for incoming ‘27 interns for getting a return offer?
I’ve spent most of this summer trying to have a life but found my way back onto this site and immidiately gave myself anxiety seeing all the doom and gloom about this summer’s return rates.
So, interns from this summer, if you got a return offer, what do you feel did it for you? If you didn’t, what was the feedback? Full times, why did you send the interns home that you did? Seeing all sorts of comments about feedback not making sense, how can I make sure that’s not me?
I think it rly depends on firm and group. I was told overwhelmingly positive feedback and then at the end I made a mistake and they weighed that pretty heavily. All I can say is I tried the very best I could and I think a. Lot of times you can prep as much as u can but at the end of the day life happens and it can be out of ur control. But that doesn’t mean u can’t increase ur odds of the return.
Anyone who says that u shouldn’t prep before the internship and that you’ll learn everything on the job is absolutely wrong. Please learn everything you can about the industry you’ll be working in like the back of your hand. Become an excel and POT WIZARD. Those two things will help you hit the desk a lot more confidently.
Ro’s are decreasing. They’re looking for reasons to cut people. My groups return was less than 50%. Good luck.

Thank you for the insight.
I've been a pot wizard since the 10th grade
i really wouldn’t worry so much personally! Very much subjective but from what I have heard, return rates are down because quality of interns are down. I have noticed that people are either incompetent (cannot do basic things like taking notes or prioritizing work) or socially very unaware, and those are the people who do not get the ro. I would focus on 1) putting your head down and not worrying abt others around you 2) get to know as many ppl as possible through coffee chats 3) doing the best job that you can on all the no brainer things (put time into your final project, don’t make the same mistake twice, respond to messages immediately, etc.)
