Advice on Active Application Process

Seeking some advice regarding an active application process I'm in. 

For context: The role is for portfolio valuation, but within a well-known investment bank. I passed the modeling test + exam and received a screening call from talent acquisition. During that call, the talent acquisition person asked if I was interested in their IB team.

I didn't want to risk messing up the portfolio valuation process, so I essentially said no. But I actually am interested in IB too.

My question: Was I right in saying no so that I can hopefully get the portfolio valuation role and pivot later, or should I have been more forthcoming? My initial take was that they were simply trying to see if I was truly interested in the PV role (which I still am) or solely trying to use it as a stepping stone to IB.
