Analyst Lateral Interview Questions 2026

Currently an Analyst 2 at a lower-middle-market investment bank with 1 year and 2 months of experience and looking to lateral to another bank.

For anyone who has gone through lateral recruiting around the 1-year mark, how difficult were the technicals compared with undergrad/full-time recruiting? I definitely need to brush up, but I’m trying to gauge how deep I should go.

Would having the BIWS 400 Questions down generally be enough?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, lateral interviews for analysts tend to focus more on your deal experience and technical skills compared to undergrad/full-time recruiting. While lateral interviews are often described as less predatory and more conversational, you still need to be well-prepared for technical questions. Here's what you should know:

  1. Technical Depth:

    • Lateral interviews are often more technical than undergrad/full-time recruiting. Banks expect you to hit the ground running, so they may test your ability to handle complex modeling tasks and technical concepts.
    • Having the BIWS 400 Questions down is a good start, but it might not be enough. You should also focus on advanced modeling skills, such as LBO modeling, DCF, and accretion/dilution tests. Resources like WSP modeling courses, Macabacus, and BIWS guides are highly recommended for deeper preparation.
  2. Modeling Tests:

    • Be prepared for modeling tests, as these are common in lateral recruiting. For example, you might face a 1-2 hour modeling test followed by a debrief session. These tests often go beyond basic concepts and require you to demonstrate proficiency in building and analyzing financial models.
  3. Deal Experience:

    • Expect questions about your deal experience. Be ready to discuss the deals you've worked on, your specific contributions, and the challenges you faced. Banks want to see that you can articulate your experience clearly and concisely.
  4. Behavioral and Fit Questions:

    • While technicals are critical, don't neglect behavioral questions. Banks will want to understand your motivation for lateraling, your ability to work in a team, and how you handle challenges.
  5. Preparation Strategy:

    • Dedicate time to reviewing any technical concepts you're not 100% confident in. Spend as much free time as possible practicing modeling tests and reviewing advanced technicals.
    • Networking can also play a significant role in lateral recruiting. Reaching out to associates and senior bankers in the groups you're targeting can help you stand out.

In summary, while the BIWS 400 Questions are a solid foundation, you should aim to go deeper into technicals and modeling to ensure you're fully prepared for the challenges of lateral recruiting.
