Anxiety
Realizing that IB may not be for me. Freshman at a decent target school, currently recruiting for IB. Major personal issue that I've identified recently is that when I'm dealing with an overwhelming amount of anxiety, I find it near impossible to get work done. I've done my fair bit of reading and listening to IB analyst horror stories, and I honestly don't think I would fair any better if I was put in their shoes.
I find this industry genuinely interesting, but I think the most sustainable path for me forward is to take a hit to prestige + pay and seek out a chill regional boutique. That or recruit for UBS tech lmao
How have you guys managed anxiety. Is it conquerable or will it be chronic?
Appreciate your guys' response
Based on the most helpful WSO content, managing anxiety in investment banking is a common challenge, and many professionals have shared their strategies and experiences. Here are some key takeaways and advice:
Perspective is Key: Many analysts and associates emphasize the importance of not taking the job too seriously. One user noted that 95% of analysts and associates exit the industry within 2-3 years, and once they leave, they realize the stress and anxiety they experienced were not worth it. Keeping this in mind can help you stay grounded.
Focus on the Present: Anxiety often stems from worrying about future tasks or outcomes. A junior banker shared that they used to mentally destroy themselves by overthinking all the work ahead when a new deal was signed. Instead, they found it helpful to focus on daily or weekly tasks rather than the entire workload. Staying present can make the workload feel more manageable.
Consider Your Mental Health: If the anxiety feels overwhelming and chronic, it’s worth evaluating whether the industry aligns with your long-term well-being. As one user pointed out, no bonus or prestige is worth a severe decline in mental health. Seeking a less intense role, like at a regional boutique, could be a sustainable and fulfilling alternative.
Practical Stress Management Tips:
Is Anxiety Conquerable?: While anxiety can be managed and reduced, it may not completely disappear, especially in high-stress industries like IB. However, with the right strategies and support, many professionals find ways to cope effectively.
Ultimately, it’s important to prioritize your mental health and choose a path that aligns with your personal values and well-being. If you’re already questioning whether IB is the right fit, exploring other options like regional boutiques or less intense roles could be a wise move.
