Applying again
Hi everyone,
I applied to a 6-month internship a month ago and were rejected (probably because of the online tests). I had a recommendation from an associate of an industry team (the offer encompassed multiple teams, with an AC). Recently, this industry team published a separate offer for a different start date (a few months earlier, which suits me as well), and I applied promptly since it's my favorite one.
My question is: should I send a message to this banker (I had a networking call with him)? Should I tell him that I was rejected, and that I applied to the new offer?
Thank you so much for you help!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you should approach this situation:
Yes, reach out to the banker: Since you already had a networking call with the associate and they recommended you previously, it's a good idea to reconnect. This shows initiative and keeps you on their radar.
Acknowledge the rejection tactfully: You don’t need to dwell on the rejection. Instead, frame it positively. For example, mention that while you weren’t selected for the previous role, you’re still very enthusiastic about the team and the new opportunity.
Highlight your application to the new offer: Let them know you’ve applied to the new position and emphasize why this specific role and start date align with your goals and availability. This demonstrates your genuine interest in their team.
Ask for advice or support: Politely ask if they have any advice for your application or if they could provide guidance to strengthen your candidacy. If they’re willing, they might even advocate for you again.
Here’s a sample message you could send:
Subject: Excited About the New Opportunity
Hi [Banker’s Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to thank you again for your support during my previous application to [Company/Team]. While I wasn’t selected for that role, I remain very enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to [Team Name].
I noticed that your team recently posted a new internship position with an earlier start date, which aligns perfectly with my availability and goals. I’ve already submitted my application and wanted to let you know how excited I am about this opportunity.
If you have any advice or insights on how I can strengthen my candidacy, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you again for your time and support, and I hope to stay in touch!
Best regards,
[Your Name]
This approach is professional, polite, and keeps the door open for further support. Good luck!
