Are all VP's created equal?
During the Fourth of July, I was at a country club with my family to watch fireworks. My father introduced me to a group of men and we shook hands, introducing ourselves. I left the group and was later told, that one of the men is a VP at Morgan Stanley. I asked my dad, which division he was in but he didn't know. If I become friendlier with this VP, when it comes time to submitting my resume, does it matter whether he is a VP of say Wealth Management, or is the VP title itself enough pull in the firm to have my resume looked at for IBD?
I understand I am still young, but would appreciate any insight. Thank you.
yes, it does matter. If he is a VP and involved in recruiting or knows someone who is, he can help you. Otherwise, he likely won't have too much sway
It matters quite a bit. For example an ops VP or a VP on the commodities desk has no say in IBD recruiting. Also there is a large difference between someone who is a newer VP or a senior VP that has had the title for 6+ years.
I applaud you for networking at the country club. Well played.
