Are grades a good reflection of capabilities in IB?
Pretty much title. I have a 3.47~ GPA from a non target and next year I will be interning in IB. I know my grades aren’t too great but is there a direct correlation with good grades and performing well in IB?
If you have lower grades because you never did your school work then yes, since this is a job that’s all about prioritizing tons of deadlines. The only way to succeed would be to learn how to do this.
If you have low grades because you did poorly in your finance classes then yes, because this is a job that requires an understanding of/the ability to understand finance. If you never had any finance classes, and your grades are low because you were in some intense major like chemical engineering, then it’s probably not a predictor for success.
If you have a lower GPA because you partied through college but you’re actually much smarter than your grades would show, then no, as long as you actually do your job when you’re on the desk.
In other words, it’s less about the cutoff and more about who you are as a worker. Banking isn’t a terribly hard job in terms of subject matter - it’s a really hard job in terms of deadlines and grinding under pressure. Honestly, the fact that you got an offer stands as a testament to your ability to do the job - it’s not necessarily easy to land an offer while also doing classes since it requires so much networking + studying outside of school. Just stay confident and learn to grind + learn to work quickly. If you do this well then you’ll be fine.
Even if there were a direct correlation, that wouldn't imply causation. There could be (and are) 100 other factors other than grades that affect performance.
Generally, if you have good grades, you're willing to put in the effort to get good grades, and effort goes a long way in IB. I can't find the post containing the comment, but one user said he enjoys IB because he's too stupid for SWE, but can work like a damn horse.
