Leaving mid-year after an internal group switch — bad look?
Currently an associate at a BB. Spent my first couple years in another group at the bank and recently transferred internally to one of the firm’s stronger groups. If I left in the next few months, I’d have spent less than a year in the new group.
Pretty clear at this point that banking isn’t what I want to keep doing. Looking to move into VC/GE or potentially join a startup. The lifestyle is definitely part of it, but I’m also more interested in moving toward what I actually want to do next, and I’m having a hard time convincing myself that staying another six to twelve months meaningfully changes my prospects versus recruiting for those roles now.
The main thing giving me pause is the timing, especially having just switched groups. I’d have 2+ years at the same bank, but a relatively short stint in the new seat.
Beyond leaving money on the table, is there a real downside to leaving mid-year versus finishing out the year? Does leaving this soon after an internal transfer burn bridges in a way that could actually follow me through references or future recruiting? And would the additional time in a stronger group materially help for VC/GE exits, or am I overthinking the need to hit some arbitrary tenure milestone?
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s left under similar circumstances or seen how it played out for someone else.
