Associate A1/2 PE Recruiting

Throw away account for obvious reasons. Not sure what the right abbreviations are here but went to a top college, MBA and EB:

Lots of college kids and analysts on this message board. Curious to hear from actual IB associates (especially b-school associates) who transitioned to PE - Couple of questions:

  1. Have any of you recently made the jump from from IB (esp. EB) to PE (esp. MM PE)? If you have, would love to know how you started that transition (i.e. when did you begin outreach / was it before/after A1 bonus?) and if you used any recruiters?

  2. For hiring managers in PE / Corp. Dev: Is execution experience or sector knowledge more valuable when evaluating candidates? Obviously both, but wondering how to structure and position CVs.

Thanks all.

I lateraled to PE 2 yrs post MBA from a BB. I mostly used my personal network, and also asked analysts who had gone through buyside recuriting if they were aware of the firms they’d interviewed with were looking for Sr Associates/Jr VPs. Got one strong lead from each avenue, interviewed at a few places shortly after getting my A1 bonus.

Best to lateral out as early as possible before you get too senior/expensive/pigeonholed.
