Associate Lateral

If you were not at the firm you wanted to be at during the summer how did you make the jump? What are the pros and cons as well as likelihoods of recruiting for FT vs being an associate at that firm for a year or so?

Does it become substantially easier to lateral once you have been an associate for a year?
