Associate told me to turn off "permanent offline" on Team

What would you do in this situation? Ever since hitting my second year, I've turned my Microsoft Teams status to offline. I like nobody monitoring the second that I log on, how many minutes I'm away for lunch / dinner, etc. I am always always responsive.

Having said this, a new associate I'm working with requested that I turn off permanent offline. I initially complied, but I find it quite annoying. For further context, I'll need to continue working with this associate for the next several months...

To be honest, I don't know why people turn on "permanent offline" mode. It seems pretentious. No one's monitoring how many hours or minutes you're away from your desk...

That’s a helpful perspective. And maybe my associate is coming from good faith, then.

But I will say, I’ve had another associate literally time me and other analyst. I kid you not, he gave me a call about the number of minutes I was offline (while responsive). It’s people like that make us do it.

And given the job expects us to allows be responsive, I don’t know why you would care …

I'm more concerned about the Associate's judgement on time management if he's taking time out to time how long you were offline...

Look, if it were me, I wouldn't care. I know that even if the little thing comes up as "Away", it doesn't really even mean anything because, as you said, you have to be responsive in this job. Sometimes you're gone for a coffee, or you're waiting on comments, and you just will be away for a while.

I will have my thing come up as away if I'm not doing anything, but as soon as I get a message I respond immediately.

9/10 they’re looking for more ammunition to show the staffer you’re useless so that they can get a real analyst staffed on the project

someone will ask you to do this because you’re unreasonably slow at basic stuff and they want to see if you’re just lazy or not working or if you need additional coaching to teach you how to do the basics quicker.

Or you could have a reputation of telling team A you’re busy on team B project and team B you’re busy on team A project.

Every junior beyond Analyst 1 has their teams set as permanently away or offline in my team globally (LDN/NYC/SF/etc) so if the others in your team do it, would ignore the Associate.

The one VP in my team who used to care about juniors doing this would routinely leave his notepad on the space bar to appear green even when he went out for coffee in the office, he is now the butt of many jokes due to this hypocrisy

This is dumb and not even worth fighting over / thinking about. I understand where you're coming from because all the ANs in my group also do the "always offline" thing.

The reality is no one cares, no one has time to look

You could just decline while promising to be responsive. This would end the issue in the short term. You might piss him off, but it’s not like he could cry to a senior banker without looking like a clown.

A lot depends on how well he performs. If the senior bankers don't respect him, you can *easily* get away with this (and more). Especially if you’re well liked. But if he is a star and harbors a grudge, this may come back to bite you in the ass.

Almost all juniors in my bank have their status set to offline...not sure why an associate would really care. It'd be a different thing if your VP+ said something, but I really think you can keep it on. I know "nobody checks or cares," but there is always gonna be that time when you're done early for the day and step away from your CPU (but can always hop back on quickly since you have your phone by you), it looks less bad to be offline compared to "last online at ~6 PM"
