Awareness of IB among general UK population?

For context, I'm from another much smaller European country, where I can definitely say 99%+ of people have no idea what investment banking is or how much money people make.

Is this different from the UK, where target schools and IBD recruitment is generally much more of a thing than where I'm from? Or would awareness of IB be solely confined to pockets of certain students and universities? Interested to hear people's insight on this.

I guess I'm also asking in terms of if I move to London and people ask me what I do for a living (generally I try and be as vague as possible lol), how is banking/finance perceived generally?

well yeah, it's a pretty obscene salary to make right out of undergrad, never mind higher levels, and it's not something I had the slightest clue about before university, so I was wondering if it's the same for people in the UK? thanks for the unnecessary disability slur though, real nice.

wouldn't say the salary is particularly obscene in London tbh. most people get the gist of the job being good/prestigious/whatever

Odd question - yeah finance is generally known to be a prestigious career, certainly people living in London are more likely to be aware because they have a higher concentration of finance professionals in general, but it's not like most people spend their days thinking about IBD recruitment. Even in finance-heavy areas I always just say I work in finance or banking and be very generic unless someone clearly also works in a closely related area.

It’s not that I care, it’s literally just as you said, saying that you work at a bank makes everyone (me included) think of a bank teller, and I was just curious if it’s any better known in the UK than where I’m from.

I'm not native British but hopefully I can help as I have spent a good number of years here.

For those that do not know what IBD is - generally two schools of thought. First type (70%) will think that finance is a lucrative and respectable career, second type (30%) will think we are capitalist slaves to the corporate world (they still think we make lots of money but absolutely hate us)

For those that know IBD - they generally have a pretty high regard for bankers, either because they work in other areas of the bank / finance and know that we're bringing in huge fees, or because they have banker friends / recruited for IB before but ended up somewhere else
