Background checks

Last summer I interned at a smaller firm. Due to it's administrative setup, I had to be self-employed. I confirmed that this was legally permissable.

Could this cause problems in future background checks? I do not have any paystubs or documentation due to the self-employment.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, self-employment during an internship can raise some challenges during background checks, especially if you lack paystubs or formal documentation. However, there are ways to mitigate potential issues:

  1. Documentation Alternatives: If you don't have paystubs, consider providing other forms of proof, such as:

    • A signed agreement or contract with the firm.
    • Emails or correspondence confirming your role and responsibilities.
    • Invoices or payment records (if applicable).
    • A reference from someone at the firm who can verify your work.
  2. Transparency: Be upfront about the self-employment arrangement during the background check process. Clearly explain that the setup was legally permissible and provide any supporting documentation you have.

  3. References: Ensure you have a reliable contact at the firm who can vouch for your work. Background check firms often reach out to verify employment details, so having someone prepared to confirm your role is crucial.

  4. Resume Clarity: On your resume, you can list the experience as "Independent Contractor" or "Self-Employed Intern" under the firm's name. This helps set the right expectations for verifiers.

  5. Proactive Communication: If you're concerned about the lack of paystubs, you can proactively address this with the employer conducting the background check. Explain the unique setup and offer alternative documentation.

While the lack of traditional documentation might raise questions, as long as you can provide alternative proof and a clear explanation, it shouldn't cause significant problems.
