Background checks for summer analyst positions
Do firms conduct background checks before or after you sign your offer? If something comes up on the background check, will they give you a chance to explain yourself or just nix you right away? I got an underage drinking charge that will be dismissed and expunged in a couple of months, but wanted to gain clarity as to whether this will affect my current recruiting process.
It's not immediate. Usually a few months before start date.
You will be fine with that charge. It's not "we find a single item on you and you're done" unless it's a past murder conviction, securities fraud etc. If they found it, they might ask about the circumstances but I doubt they would even come back to you for something that minor. Kind of unusual to even get a charge for underage drinking, banks are very unlikely to pull an offer for that.
Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it
What about a recent DUI? Coming in as a summer associate?
Probably fine as long as it wasn't felony DUI. I think this is the type of thing where people are willing to forgive one mistake. Make sure you disclose it if asked, but shouldn't be disqualifying and assuming it was a misdemeanor, won't show up on your U4 (again, disclose to the bank if they specifically ask about convictions)
Obviously you absolutely cannot get another one though. Take the Ubers my man
I don't know how sealed records work. But if Suits (the series) is any indicator, people find out about them every time, haha.
I think some banks are starting onboarding / background checks this month but majority will be starting in April
I'm currently applying for Summer 2025 analyst roles. Is your comment about background checks starting in relation to students in summer 2024 roles?
oh yeah this is for SA24
Since it’s already being dismissed and expunged, I’d get the exact timeline and background-check rules clarified before the employer runs it. McCabe Law underage DUI attorney in Boulder could be worth contacting to understand how the charge may show up during that process.
They don't usually just see something and instantly bin you. If it comes up, there may be a chance to explain the circumstances.
Since it's being dismissed and expunged, I'd wait for the official result before assuming it will hurt your recruiting.
