Background checks for summer analyst positions

Do firms conduct background checks before or after you sign your offer? If something comes up on the background check, will they give you a chance to explain yourself or just nix you right away? I got an underage drinking charge that will be dismissed and expunged in a couple of months, but wanted to gain clarity as to whether this will affect my current recruiting process.

It's not immediate. Usually a few months before start date.

You will be fine with that charge. It's not "we find a single item on you and you're done" unless it's a past murder conviction, securities fraud etc. If they found it, they might ask about the circumstances but I doubt they would even come back to you for something that minor. Kind of unusual to even get a charge for underage drinking, banks are very unlikely to pull an offer for that.

Probably fine as long as it wasn't felony DUI. I think this is the type of thing where people are willing to forgive one mistake. Make sure you disclose it if asked, but shouldn't be disqualifying and assuming it was a misdemeanor, won't show up on your U4 (again, disclose to the bank if they specifically ask about convictions)

Obviously you absolutely cannot get another one though. Take the Ubers my man
