Backpack or briefcase for analyst?

Recently signed a full-time job offer and parents want to buy me a leather Tumi backpack or briefcase as a gift. Do most analysts use backpacks or briefcases in NY? Trying to see what would be better.

It depends on how much stuff and what kind of stuff you carry. Practical solution for NYC and London are often backpacks; on the train they can be taken off quickly, you can wear them in the back or front (depending on how full it is), and they often have more practical designs inside/outside.
What exactly is it for? A day pack with snacks, emergency items, etc?
Or do you carry your laptop around in that?

I keep everything I need at the office. Gum, extra contacts, tie, jacket, shoes, glasses, etc. Unless I need to take something in for some reason, I usually just head out with keys, wallet, phone, airpods.

nothing is silly about a banker bag. people with some weird self-loathing issue just have a problem with carrying them around because they think the disinterested, soulless fucks on the nyc subway are actually stopping to take a look at the luggage of those around them and think "wow that guy works at citi, what a dickhead" when they get to the banker bag

it's a fucking bag that you got for free. i dont get where the complex comes from. you are taking a FREE bag YOUR JOB gave you to YOUR JOB

Think a messenger is the best bet here - personally own a black Ted Baker bag and find it suits my situation well

Backpacks and suits don’t look great, and I’m not a huge fan of backpacks on tucked in shirts either

Also generally speaking you won’t need to be carrying much to/from the office everyday - staples are usually laptop, keys/access cards, notebook, pens, food - meaning you don’t need a large backpack in most cases
