Backpack or briefcase for analyst?
Recently signed a full-time job offer and parents want to buy me a leather Tumi backpack or briefcase as a gift. Do most analysts use backpacks or briefcases in NY? Trying to see what would be better.

I just put everything in my pockets - got really deep ones
Curious too
It depends on how much stuff and what kind of stuff you carry. Practical solution for NYC and London are often backpacks; on the train they can be taken off quickly, you can wear them in the back or front (depending on how full it is), and they often have more practical designs inside/outside.
What exactly is it for? A day pack with snacks, emergency items, etc?
Or do you carry your laptop around in that?
Most analysts in my group have backpacks, haven't seen someone with a briefcase
Could not have answered this without the context it was a “top BB”
I’ve been WFH so not sure how it works, but is it normal for everyone to wear a backpack? Or do we need a messenger bag? I want to put some snacks, drink, and stuff?
I keep everything I need at the office. Gum, extra contacts, tie, jacket, shoes, glasses, etc. Unless I need to take something in for some reason, I usually just head out with keys, wallet, phone, airpods.
Tumi backpack is pretty standard IMO. It’s a great investment too. Doesn’t go out of style and will last a long time. I’ve had my current tumi for over 3 years
I don’t think I can pay that much. Can I use my jansport backpack?
you work at tobin & co or something?
do we have to bring our backpacks to school tom
A leather satchel/messenger bag is probably my choice - not as uptight as a briefcase, as out of place as a backpack, or as silly as a banker bag. It plays well in office and at meetings in that no one will think of it as out of place.
Though given the "top BB" bit in your topic, you'll probably just use the banker bag.
whats silly about a banker bag?
nothing is silly about a banker bag. people with some weird self-loathing issue just have a problem with carrying them around because they think the disinterested, soulless fucks on the nyc subway are actually stopping to take a look at the luggage of those around them and think "wow that guy works at citi, what a dickhead" when they get to the banker bag
it's a fucking bag that you got for free. i dont get where the complex comes from. you are taking a FREE bag YOUR JOB gave you to YOUR JOB
Just make sure you fit in.
I have a backpack but mind you this industry is full of questionable characters.. a COO at one bank when I was an analyst told me not to carry a backpack to the office because it doesn’t look presentable.. it was a >$500 tumi backpack
Versace gowns cost thousands of dollars but they wouldn't be presentable in an office setting, so it's not just about the price.
That said, Tumi backpacks tend to be pretty staid looking so I don't know what this COO's problem was.
.
Tumi backpack probably ok; most other backpacks are not
I prefer a duffle bag. Can throw my gym clothes in when needed or whatever else
Not sure I have seen a briefcase ever but perhaps some type of messenger bag or satchel works; just not my style
Shit I was too late before op deleted the top bb part
lol same
I’m surprised only one person has mentioned this, but duffle bags. Walk around outside and you’ll see them everywhere. No clue when it becomes unacceptable, but I’ve seen people in PE using them still.
Most analysts at GS/MS are using rolling Jansports
Not the monogramed LLBeans?
Backpack on a suit looks awful, like you're on the way to a high school Model UN
Is a simple dark Eastpak fine?
Think a messenger is the best bet here - personally own a black Ted Baker bag and find it suits my situation well
Backpacks and suits don’t look great, and I’m not a huge fan of backpacks on tucked in shirts either
Also generally speaking you won’t need to be carrying much to/from the office everyday - staples are usually laptop, keys/access cards, notebook, pens, food - meaning you don’t need a large backpack in most cases
Backpack is the boring, utilitarian answer, but I think it doesn't get more handsome than the Filson Original Briefcase - not as stuffy as a leather briefcase and plenty functional. Carries as much as you can toss at it and still looks sharp (not too formal).

London or NYC? It's a bit more old school in Europe, briefcases are more common.
Would have said the opposite ? London is pretty chill
I didn't know banker bags were still a thing, nobody in my BU has them. but boy, there is this https://wardenbrooks.com/wall-street-banker-bags/
haha
Impressive. Let's See Paul Allen's Backpack
Whats a BU
This is a silly question. No, you can’t bring a duffle bag to your client’s office but when it comes to going to work everyday, just takes whatever is most comfortable for you. People won’t wait for you at the reception to take pictures of the best computer bag
Get a briefcase with a shoulder strap - Mulberry do some nice ones
Had a bag for a while, switched to a backpack and never going back. Makes life easier if you need to carry stuff or run through an airport. Shoulder straps for briefcases can be a solve but are really awkward when they're full of pitch decks, laptop and god knows what else.
A backpack is fine lol. I just use the one my company gave me
I posted this as a poll on our linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6838189287675191296
Vertx Transit Sling for casual days. Tumi briefcase for more formal days.
Fanny pack
Tiktoker gen Z diagonal bag, make sure you have the hair over your forehead too
How old are? 14? If you get a backpack, you deserve to be treated like a child.
