Congratulations on securing your 2025 IBD SA position! Navigating group placement interviews, especially for Financial Sponsors and M&A groups at a Bulge Bracket (BB) bank, requires a blend of technical knowledge, networking skills, and understanding of the group's focus areas. Here's how you can prepare effectively:

  1. Understand the Groups:

    • Financial Sponsors Group (FSG): Focuses on building and maintaining relationships with private equity firms. You should understand leveraged buyouts (LBOs), how private equity firms operate, and the current trends in the private equity space.
    • Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A): Involves advising companies on buying or merging with others and selling or divesting parts of their business. Be familiar with valuation methods, deal structuring, and the strategic rationale behind M&A transactions.
  2. Technical Preparation:

    • Financial Modeling: Be comfortable with Excel and financial modeling. Focus on LBO, DCF, and accretion/dilution models. The WSO Elite Modeling Package offers comprehensive training in these areas.
    • Valuation Techniques: Understand how to value a company using different methodologies, including comparable company analysis, precedent transactions, and discounted cash flow analysis.
    • Deal Processes: Learn the steps involved in both buy-side and sell-side transactions, from initial pitch to closing.
  3. Networking:

    • Reach Out to Current Analysts and Associates: Use the contact information provided in the HR deck to set up informational interviews. Ask insightful questions about their experiences, the group's culture, and recent deals they've worked on.
    • Prepare Questions: Tailor your questions to show genuine interest in the group's work. Ask about the group's approach to deal sourcing, the types of clients they work with, and how they see the market evolving.
  4. Behavioral Preparation:

    • Craft Your Story: Be ready to explain why you're interested in FSG or M&A specifically, how your background has prepared you for this role, and where you see your career going.
    • Practice Common Behavioral Questions: Prepare for questions about teamwork, leadership, time management, and overcoming challenges.
  5. Stay Informed:

    • Market Awareness: Keep up with financial news, especially major deals in the sectors relevant to your groups of interest. Understand the broader economic factors that may impact M&A activity or private equity investments.
  6. Mock Interviews:

    • Technical and Behavioral: Practice with peers or mentors. The WSO Interview Prep Courses can provide a structured way to prepare for both technical and behavioral aspects of the interview.

Remember, showing a genuine interest in the group's focus area, coupled with a solid foundation in technical skills and market knowledge, will set you apart. Good luck with your group placement interviews!

Just finished the placement process, got in M&A and I ranked fourth, networked w none in the M&A team and still got in. So, all by luck I guess

There's no way this is MS M&A the rankings and the process is so competitive you can't just rank it and get in.

would take m&a above fsg since this is bofa. also, just network your dick off a few months before the official process kicks off so you know the team and the staffer and they want you in the group. Know your m&a and lbo technicals, and be prepared for an lbo case study cuz fsg does one of those. Good luck
