Barclays Group Placement: MF/UMM Exits
Looking for advice going into group placement, with the priority being landing an MF/UMM offer down the line. From what I have read: PU&I, Sponsors, Healthcare, Tech, and Industrials all seem to do just fine? What is the dropoff after that for coverage?
As a general rule of thumb, any coverage should be fine. The dropoff after those 5 is rather severe. Quick Linkedin search of the past few years yielded:
PU&I to Apollo, TPG, Brookfield, Tiger Infrastructure (tons) etc.
Healthcare to Carlyle, BainCap, GA, KKR, TPG, WCAS etc.
Tech to Apax, CVC, GTCR, MDP, BC Partners, Platinum etc.
Industrials to Elliott, BX, Apollo, TPG, Charlesbank, BC Partners etc.
Sponsors probably has the best pound-for-pound placement in the bank, but hard to find on Linkedin.
Can't really go wrong with any of those groups, but placement can get competitive. If you can't wiggle your way into, I would prioritize Consumer or FIG. The other coverage groups will pigeon-hole you (REGAL, FIG, NatRes) or just aren't great from a dealflow perspective (Media, Product Groups).
Is there a good way to tell you are in the running for the more competitive groups? Just curious.
I did group placement last year and am an incoming FT. Feel like group placement is fundamentally a numbers game; you get referrals if you had a decent chat and you just have to keep the chain going. Think everyone at a "top" group probably talked to 5+ people within the team (give or take here or there based on availability; key thing is really getting refferals from those running the process and continuing the chain from there onwards).
How high up the chain are you expected to go? I have a point person in the group referring me to a handful of chats with analysts, but I'm unsure if I have to go higher up in seniority.
Would just talk to whoever the point person gives you. The process is run by analysts and associates, and the people running the process will refer you to others involved in the process. I alongside every other person I spoke to did not talk to a single person above associate for ours. It's simply not needed and people at those level are not involved much in the process anyways, at least for Barc.
Hey, was curious on how many people you spoke with? I feel like I am late in the game and have a handful of chats with the groups I want, but very nervous.
With how early on-cycle (and even off-cycle) interviews are nowadays, wouldn't worry too much about deal reps. As long as you have 1 good one on your resume to talk about.
I honestly think that Barclays is good enough to get looks from almost all groups. The self-selection is likely the main reason why some groups place better than others
