BB HR: What is the process for checking GPA, ECs, test scores, references, criminal history, etc ?
I see couple of questions on BB background check for FO jobs every day.
There are several good threads, explaining the process and everything, but advices almost never come from someone who actually worked at the BB HR. Either people speak from their experience which is kinda random, or they just preach 10 commandments.
I would like to know how exactly are GPA, ECs, test scores, references, criminal history, etc. are being checked.
I understand that some of those are often random, but I would like to hear from somebody who actually works at a London/NY/etc. BB bank and knows the stuff.
There are articles on the EFC and other websites, but usually some Head of Recruiting is speaking, and it is very formal, unrealistic interview with generic answers.
What do people want to know? It's a really simple process. I do this for candidates regularly.
Edit:
GPA: Transcript, plain and simple ECs: Rarely checked, if you list an award they may contact the people responsible for managing said award if it's actually important enough to be worth their time. Test Scores: Rarely, if ever, checked. References: Phone call to the references? Criminal History: Easily checked via background check firms that run comprehensive consumer history reports, have access to juvenile and adult criminal records databases, etc.
It would be nice if people on WSO used common sense and grew a sack. They outsource this shit. Your credit is pulled, your criminal history is pulled, they pull your transcripts. They sometimes/usually call the places you list for employment (if you have any) and confirm start and end date.
Real simple. If you have any issues/discrepancies simply let the HR person facilitating the process know. They are there to help you.
I've been on this site for over 4 years and have seen this topic discussed endlessly. Search the forum and you will find just about every situation discussed.
Second the comments above. Everything is outsourced to a third party by BBs. I don't understand the obsession with this process. My best explanation is that everyone exaggerates on their resume (surprise), then they become hopelessly paranoid when background checks begin. Relax.
So why the fuck are you starting another?
The only thing you have to actually know is to not lie and falsify information. I didn't get concerned when the government ran background checks to authorize my security clearance because I was truthful in the interviews.
I'm not worried about some bank running a background check because I didn't exaggerate or lie on my resume or in interviews.
It feels great not to have to worry about lying...or maybe it's the getting caught part everyone worries about.
I'm continually shocked at how insecure people are.
Regards
I've worked at a BB, and all I can say is what type of bull sh.t question is that? It's outsourced and it's checked very hard, so if you have lied you are in trouble. It's the same in life, you cheat, get caught, you pay. End of.
about cheating:
don't listen to these preachers kid every single one of them lies and cheats on a regular basis...
my 2 cent:
"If you aint cheating, you aint trying"
"A thing worth having, is worth cheating for"
don't be a yes man like 99% of people (here) you are giving your best to succeed
try not to get caught and if it happens - deal with the consequences like a man
good luck!
P.S. gotta agree with the guys above, that work is usually outsourced at BB's, but I think that smaller firms and regional offices don't do it
Believe it or not, some people actually have the ability to do things without lying.
Investment banking is a lie, just like your projected bonus numbers.
What are you lying about that has you so worried?
Beside's the size of my junk, nothing much. I was referencing the general banker population.
http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/blog/ib-background-checks-faq
People asking how things get checked have obviously fucked up and/or purposely falsified something.
Maybe to the general population, but to our peers we're making less per hour.
What peers do you have that are making appreciably more than $30 / hour in entry-level jobs?
people in ops working 9-5 and making 70k base + sign on + small bonus?
We're talking entry level at a bank, so ops, trading, middle office, etc.
Ignore the sign-on, bankers get that too and it's not reflective of an hourly wage. At most, you're talking $40 / hour, not appreciably different and a rate that bankers pass very quickly.
OK, how about this - a legit question on background checks.
I have an offer from top 3 BB, one of my work experiences is in my home country at a small-ish trading shop. They are half liquidated now, the programme was not that structured and I do not have any contacts at the moment. Can I omit the experience or just talk to HR about that?
Thanks RP
Don't omit anything that is on your resume. There should be a section on the background check that allows you to report that the firm is no longer in business. They can confirm your employment in other ways.
Agreed, but this was more of an insight programme and I wasn't on payroll or anything (only lasted 10 days)... Well I will give them all the info I can, and I guess we will see what happens. Thanks.
