Being called a tool
Hey Guys,
So I was just browsing through some threads on WSO and then my gf saw Wall Street Oasis on top of the page and said " You are such a tool". I dont know how many of you have been called 'tools' but normally I would disregard such comments if it came from my friends; the fact that it came from my gf made me really think about it. Is every inspiring investment banker a tool? I mean we all have to work intensely hard to make it through, which I guess makes us approach the whole thing like tools. But is there a 'non-toolish' way of doing this?
Every aspiring investment banker is not a tool. You, however, do have some tool-like qualities and I will tell you what they are so you can fix them.
1) You listen to your girlfriend when she calls you a tool. Imagine what she would say if you weren't looking for or concerned with your career prospects. Probably something along the lines of "Good bye."
2) You said, "Normally I would shrug this off if it were my friends but this is my girlfriend so I listened." This is crossing into the realm of pussy. You care because your girlfriend said it but wouldn't listen to your friends? Really? I'm all for the good natured ribbing amongst bros etc. but come on dude.
3) You posted this. Who gives a shit if someone thinks you're a tool? Your girlfriend thinks you are a tool. What does that make her? A chick who dates a tool. I wouldn't care about the opinion of a chick...(well any chick really but specifically one that dates a tool.)
4) There is a non-toolish way of going about it and it can start with not posting silly questions or being so self conscious. Everyone has to do something at one time or another to get what they want that can be considered toolish. Every flirted with a fat chick from HR for 20 minutes to get what you wanted? I have. You know what you have to do to break into this shit so go do it. Tool calling be damned.

agree with most of happypantsmcgee's comment. To reiterate and add in a bit of my own flavor:
Don't listen to your GF... TELL her.
If you want to be a banker you're going to need a more supportive GF - or no GF at all.
Don't listen to anyone who calls you a tool - you are driven and you're trying to make it happen - other people just resent that and are jealous. At the same time, don't leave yourself vulnerable to these sorts of attacks by letting other people see that you're working hard, researching etc (your GF should be an exception to this rule... she should be going down on you while you read WSO, hoping that you'll keep reading and one day become a banker so she can hit it big and have a place in Aspen and her kids at the right schools and all that shit). GF and parents aside - everyone should think that you make it easy. MAKE IT LOOK EASY. Other people on the top will know that you've worked hard, know your shit, have a top GPA and all that... don't worry about being recognized for the work... you'll be recognized for your status and bank account and the hot ass fucking wife sitting in the Benzey outside your house in the hamptons waiting to give you road head while you head back into the city on a Saturday night for an honorary benefit being held to congratulate your 100m gift to the MOMA and shit son... man up

You need to realize this forum is full of men and men have their MEN conversations. We wouldn't disrespect women this way if there was one present in a situation but please try to grasp what is going on here(a bunch of men throwing jokes around to laugh a little). I'm sure women do the same when they are around women only. Now that you fully understand what it is going on here get in the kitchen and make WSO sandwich and stop PMSing all over this site.
My ex was pretty unsupportive of a lot of crap that's important to me like getting a job, school, baseball, etc. Lots of passive aggressive remarks. Bad game? "I don't understand why you spend so much time playing that stupid sport anyway." Didn't get whatever job offer? "Oh well, sorry it didn't workout. It's really not very important, though. I can't believe you're actually upset about it."
Lose the gf; don't lose your life goals. That's what I did and I've literally never been happier. Unfortunately, I had to absorb a 5-year sunk cost on that girl but hey at least I figured it out eventually.
And once you get into banking, you can upgrade (at the worst you may have to wait until after you finish your analyst stint and have more time to go out).
You are a tool. Not because you post on WSO, but because you took something a woman said seriously.

The thing is banking has consumed by life these days. All i can think of is breaking into GS and KKR and raking in millions if not billions. Now I wouldnt take her comment seriously if I didnt think there was some truth to it.
I mean wake up read the WSJ and DealBook, spend all day talking about this shit and then I am on WSO all night. I havent even ad much sex with my gf as of late. I think I really need to focus on my career and for the time being end this relationship.
