Best banks for a long-term RX banker?

Incoming A1 at a good, but non PJT/EVR group. I love arguing. I love loopholes. I love conflict. Unfortunately I just don't really live and breathe finance the same way others do. Not sure I'd be able to make it to the top in publics, and PE seems boring as fuck. I look at my MDs... and damn they seem to have pretty fucking great lives! I'm thinking trying to climb the ranks in RX could be a perfect fit for me. Able to differentiate yourself with intelligence/creativity (unlike most traditional banking groups) while still being an "intense" environment that values competency and allows me to surround myself with intelligent, driven, and kind people! I recognize that the apprenticeship model of yesteryear is slowly fading away, but I'm curious what people with more experience in the field would recommend.

For a long-term career in restructuring (RX), especially given your interests in argumentation, creativity, and working in an intense, competency-driven environment, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

Top Banks for RX

  1. PJT Partners (Restructuring Group): The gold standard for RX. Known for its elite deal flow, technical rigor, and strong exit opportunities. If you can lateral here, it’s worth considering.
  2. Evercore (Restructuring Group): Another top-tier RX shop with a strong reputation for complex, high-profile deals. Their RX team is highly respected and offers excellent long-term career prospects.
  3. Lazard (Restructuring Group): A powerhouse in RX, especially for distressed M&A and capital structure advisory. Lazard’s RX team is known for its intellectual rigor and strong client relationships.
  4. Moelis & Company: A strong player in RX with a lean team structure, which means more responsibility and exposure early on. They’re known for their intense culture but also for producing top-notch RX bankers.
  5. Houlihan Lokey (Financial Restructuring Group): The largest RX team globally, with a strong focus on middle-market deals. They’re a great option if you want consistent deal flow and a more technical focus.
  6. Blackstone (Restructuring Advisory): Though smaller in scale now, Blackstone’s RX legacy is still highly regarded. If you can find a way in, it’s a great name to have on your resume.

Why RX Fits Your Personality

  • Intellectual Challenge: RX is a hybrid of finance and law, requiring you to navigate credit agreements, bond indentures, and complex capital structures. Your love for loopholes and conflict will thrive here.
  • Creativity: Unlike cookie-cutter M&A, RX deals are unique and require tailored solutions. You’ll have the chance to differentiate yourself with innovative thinking.
  • Job Security: RX is countercyclical, meaning it thrives during economic downturns. This makes it one of the most stable areas in finance.
  • Long-Term Career: RX MDs often have great lives because the work is intellectually stimulating, and the niche nature of RX makes it harder to replace experienced professionals.

How to Position Yourself for Success

  1. Technical Mastery: RX is highly technical. Focus on mastering capital structures, distressed M&A, and legal frameworks. Resources like Moyer’s Distressed Debt Analysis are a must-read.
  2. Networking: Build relationships with RX professionals at top firms. Smaller RX groups value scrappiness and intellectual curiosity, so make sure to demonstrate both in your conversations.
  3. Lateral Opportunities: If you’re not at a PJT/EVR-level group, consider lateraling to a top RX shop. Highlight your passion for RX and your ability to handle complex, high-stakes situations.
  4. Stay Updated: Follow distressed situations and bankruptcy trends. Platforms like Reorg Research, DebtWire, and LCDComps are invaluable for staying informed.

Final Thoughts

RX is a fantastic long-term career path for someone with your interests and personality. The top RX groups value intelligence, creativity, and the ability to thrive in high-pressure environments. If you’re willing to put in the work to master the technical and legal aspects of the field, you’ll find yourself surrounded by like-minded, driven professionals who share your passion for solving complex problems.

PJT has good promotion culture at the asso+ level and still have MDs promoted today that came from asso. Just not for A2A
