Hey,
I am looking to learn more about financial markets and about the trading world. What books would you recommend. I know very little/nothing about it right now. I am currently reading Freefall by J. Stiglitz, but it talks alot about the crash. I would like to know how they work, why stock prices shift etc.

"How to make money in Stocks" by the guy who started IBD (paper). If you really want to learn about it in a more practical / interesting way, subscribe to IBD and read that paper instead of reading about abstract theories, etc. you can see it applied to live markets and companes you have heard of. It is a little expensive (relative to say, WSJ) but well worth it. Great cartoons too :)

HI guys I am new on WSO and I am looking for a book/website that describes the conceptual ideas, mechanics and dynamics behind the financial markets. You often read in the papers or hear in the news headlines such as: Oil prises have dropped, the interest rate is set to hike, the dollar has depreciated, the german 10Y fell 10 bp etc. all concepts I somewhat understand, but how are alle these events on the financial markets linked??
I have been reading, A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Malkiel and it gives a pretty good explanation of the markets and how they work without feeling too much like I am reading a textbook.

What is the best way to learn about the markets for ib interviews?
I tried reading the WSJ but some sections just seemed too complicated for me to understand-mostly the jargon. What do you guys read or learn from to learn more about the markets and finance and specifically IB?
WSJ isn't going to teach you shit.
If you are looking for some good talking points, 'financial sense' has some good viewpoints.
http://dealbook.nytimes.com/ is good for M&A/IPOs/things under the same umbrella.
I find that http://www.project-syndicate.org/ is really great. While it doesn't talk about the markets and finance specifically, the different columnists have interesting viewpoints on both the economics, business and politics.

Hello, I'm a 19 year old Economics undergraduate. It is therefore not surprising that I am interested in understanding information about global markets. I believe that as well as performing excellently in my degree, that the earlier I begin to understand the financial industry, the more equipped and confident I will be in whatever finance-related career I work in later on. However, I have been experiencing difficulty in understanding news concerning Stock, Commodity, Rates and Bonds and currency markets and would appreciate any advice I can receive on how to overcome this difficulty. I would love to see tips suggested such as books to read on this, websites to visit, classes to attend, any pattern in reading the information that you personally use that makes it easier for you to comprehend the information or a list of the fundamental ideas on markets that I need to grasp first in order to understand it. I'd love to hear about everything about how you think I could improve on this.

The "All about ... " series is generally quite good introductory material. The books aren't technically great, but they do a very good job of introducing you to all the basic information in a comprehensive manner.

The Everything Investing Book: How to Pick, Buy and Sell Stocks, Bonds and Mutual Funds by Rich Mintzer is not bad for giving you a basic, simple understanding of basic investing principles.
There are better books for valuing stocks however, if that's more what you're referring to.
Investments by Bodie, Kane, and Marcus. This is a very well written textbook that can help you get started.

Principles of Corporate Finance by Brealey Allen and Meyer, just grab the newest edition I think its the 11th. This book has been used by MIT and a number of other top schools for their intro to finance class for the past six years (it gets updated every few years). Are you just looking to play the market? Or do you want a career in finance?
