Money and Government by Robert Skidelsky - great book, discusses the dearth of economic theory around money beyond its role as a medium of exchange.
The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers by Paul Kennedy - a classic in the "grand strategy" school of history, which focusses on relative differences in resources and power between nations as the driver of history instead of the "great men of history" crowd.
Human Evolution by Robin Dunbar - brilliant introduction to a lifetime's work by the author, one of the world's foremost anthropologists. really, really educational regarding the evolution of the brain and how that influenced human culture. a truly superior alternative to any of those pop sociology 101 books for idiots and hacks.
literally any bookby Michael Lewis - wonderful talent, his books are the toppest (that's a word?) of top shelf material.

Generally like Lewis a lot but last few years he's gotten real sanctimonious about greed on Wall Street and all that. I think that drove some of his mistaken thinking on Flash Boys. He was a little too sure of himself on that one and the whole corruption/cheating angle is pretty hazy, which is why I think the book hasn't done as well (I'm not sure about copies sold but it sure doesn't have the long-term following of his other books and the movie project is on life support).
