This is highly bank dependent. PanEuropean's '20 Most Frequently Asked Questions - London Edition' is a good starting point to get a broad idea.
'Best groups' may vary based on personal preferences (i'd rather be in Consumer or LevFin rather than TMT, but that's just me); however, I would try to go to the best group at your bank (better deal flow, better exit ops, maybe better bonuses etc.)
