Most AE shoes are at least partially assembled outside the US. They're pretty good quality for the price but the major British shoe companies run summer sales and that alongside the strength of the dollar meant you could get significantly better shoes at the same price. If you want to max out your quality / price ratio, Carlos Santos and TLB Mallorca are significantly better than AE for quality and pricing is not much more if at all.
Around 500 I would look at Carmina
Below 500, Meermin
500 - 1000 Vass, Gaziano and Girling
1000+ Enzo Bonafe, Edward Green
You can get Bonafe for significantly less than G&G but all the names in your 500-1000+ are great makes. Would add Meccariello, Lattanzi, Scafora, St Crispin, Aubercy, Bemer to those
