Best way to leave Google to start long journey to join the buy side.
Hi all,
I am a software engineer in Google, who is interested in buy side finance.
That being said, I recently got an strat offer from GS in HK.
After visiting the office and talk about the project in more detail, for one thing, I am bit worried by legacy the technology infrastructure.
Another thing, I am still not convinced if working in GS would open the doors for buy side opportunity.
Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Given your strong academic background (Ph. D) and Software Engineering experience, I think you should be looking into more quantitative-focused funds that will allow you to leverage your experiences. Some firms that come to mind include DE Shaw, Two Sigma, Citadel, Jane Street etc. Outside of that, you should look to be networking with your school alumni as well as former Googlers who have made the jump to funds you might be interested. A good resource for you specifically would be the Quantnet forums, which focus on quant-roles. A big part of the transfer is the story that you tell, so I suggest spending more time thinking about how to explain why you want to jump from SWE to finance.
Finally, I would recommend using a throwaway account rather than one connected to your personal identity when discussing these matters. Imagine what would it would be like for someone working at GS HK or Google to stumble upon this post.
