big 4 accounting internship helpful?
Ok, I am strongly considering trying to get a Big 4 accounting internship (prob. audit) next spring, for several reasons. I’m curious if you all think this experience would be helpful at all given my goals.
Consider: -I’m doing PWM this summer and that will be the only experience on my resume.
-I wouldn’t have to waste a summer on this, it would be during spring.
-Its very well paid so it’s not like I would be doing it just for the experience.
-Im on track to graduate a semester late so doing this Spring internship would put me a full year late and thus on time for the recruiting cycle (plus I plan to do an MSF and would have nothing to do for a semester before it begins if I don’t delay graduation).
-my long term goals are ER and then HF
I’m curious if a big 4 name on my resume would help add credibility when applying for F500/ER/banking and also would it qualify as respectable experience when applying to MSFs. Since I’m graduating late I will have an extra summer to intern. I’m wondering if PWM + Big 4 audit on my resume would be significantly better than PWM alone when looking for a better internship next summer like boutique/MM IB, ER, F500.
SB for helpful responses, thanks in advance
Accountings is extremely useful for valuation...but no prestige. I probably wouldnt waste the time...id go intern for a small hf and actually engage in ER...just me
^to add, feel free to pm me about landing a small hf...that's how i got my break into good internship experience
bump, any other advice
by the way, sent you a pm
I'd do it, honestly, who cares about prestige. It helped me a lot during my interviews and I am sure that my interviewers respected my experience and knowledge in the field.
Thats kind of what I was thinking. For the person from a target school following the typical path to IB it wouldn't make sense. But considering that there are no other options for me in the spring except school, it seems like it might make sense to add something to the experience section of my resume.
I think that the Big 4 is valuable if you are from a non/semi-target. I will be an IBD SA at GS/MS/JPM this summer, and I did Big 4 audit during my sophomore summer (and a finance internship after freshman year). Coming from a non/semi-target, I think that the Big 4 adds a bit of brand recognition to your resume.
Honestly, I didn't really learn anything applicable from my summer in auditing. My resume shows that I'm interested in finance rather than accounting (from ECs, other internships, etc.), so I used the experience as an opportunity to show that I have solid accounting skills, which is something that my interviewers definitely seemed to like.
