Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

Compensation for Corporate Banking at BofA, JPM, and Citi:

  1. Associate Level:

    • Base salary typically starts around $100k for most shops, with all-in comp (base + bonus) reaching approximately $200k.
    • Bonuses are generally lower than DCM and Syndications, with a haircut of around 50% compared to IB bonuses.
  2. VP Level:

    • Base salary ranges between $175k-$225k, depending on the bank.
    • All-in comp for VPs is typically in the range of $250k-$325k.
    • Again, bonuses are smaller compared to DCM and Syndications, but the work-life balance is significantly better.

Comparison to DCM and Syndications:

  • Compensation: DCM and Syndications tend to offer higher bonuses, making their total comp higher than Corporate Banking. However, the gap widens as you move up the ranks.
  • Work-Life Balance: Corporate Banking offers a more relaxed lifestyle, with 50-60 hours per week being the norm, compared to the more intense hours in DCM and Syndications.

Is it Worth It?

  • If you value work-life balance and are interested in the debt markets, Corporate Banking is a great long-term career path. While the pay is slightly lower than DCM and Syndications, the trade-off is a better lifestyle and less stress.
  • At the MD level, top corporate bankers can still earn $400k-$1mm per year, which is competitive for the effort required.
