Bonus Bananas September 13, 2013

1) Where Is Dick Fuld Now? Finding Lehman Brothers' Last CEO (Businessweek) - This won't exactly evoke sympathy for Fuld, but it's at least an even-handed treatment of the once-mighty BSD who has all but vanished. Obscurity is a good look for Dick, I think.

2) Goldman Sachs Is Dividing Its Haves and Have-Nots Over the Size of Their Bank Accounts (NY Magazine) - The latest indignity inflicted upon employees by the Vampire Squid. Your account is below 7-figures? Take that shit down the street to Wells Fargo, piker.

3) Boozy Summer in Hamptons Results in Epic Angry Landlord Letter (Jezebel) - What is it that makes finance D-bags the very worst of the D-bag ilk? First of all, if it takes 15 of you to rent a house in the Hamptons, you don't belong in the fucking Hamptons.

4) Controversial CTO Pax Dickinson Is Out at Business Insider (The Atlantic Wire) - I don't even know where to begin on this one. Maybe check out my Twitter feed from last night where I had a pretty decent discussion with Wall Street Playboys and Pax himself. It's a shitty deal for everyone involved: Pax is out on his ass, and Henry and the BI gang lose a talented CTO. Bottom line: in today's world what you post publicly can come back to bite you in the ass, and it's not a freedom of speech issue - it's a business issue. Sure, you're free to say anything you want, just know that there may be heavy consequences. In other words (like I told Pax) Freedom =/= License.

5) Sam Adams Creator Becomes Billionaire as Craft Beer Rises (Bloomberg) - How cool is it to create a craft brand and watch it make you a billionaire? Just a great success story.

6) No water, no beer: brewers race to save the ales (NBC News) - With overpopulation leading to water scarcity, it is estimated that we'll have a global crisis on our hands by 2030. The beer industry is leading the way in conservation and sustainability because their very life (and mine) depends upon it.

7) "I Killed a Man": A YouTube Confession for a Drunken Car Crash (Mashable) - This is the most powerful thing you will see all week.

8) THE END IS NIGH (LifeQuotes4U) - Pretty cool infographic about all the ways the world could end, ranked in order of likelihood (some are way more likely than you probably assume). Bonus points awarded for the irony of the fact that this was posted by a site selling life insurance.

9) Gang of chimpanzees kills their alpha male (New Scientist) - You'd better sleep with one eye open, Pat...

10) Floyd Mayweather Has $123 Million in One Bank Account (The Big Lead) - So this is pretty funny and @bondarb and I even joked about it privately, but seriously: where the hell are Floyd's handlers?

Video of the Week:

When is the last time math got you really fired up? I defy you to watch the following video on the hunt for massive prime numbers and not be inspired by the end of it. Maybe it's my inner nerd coming out, but there's just something cool about the methodology behind discovering these primes. It just makes me wonder how many we're missing by using this power-of-2-minus-1 method. Shitloads, I expect. Enjoy:

That's it for this week, guys. Let me know what you think of this week's Bananas in the comments and have a stellar weekend!

As an avid homebrewer, I know first hand hand how important water is to a brew. There is a science behind getting the perfect water (and even getting the perfect hardness or softness of the water matters a great deal). In addition, I am also an avid hippie hater; however, I can say with 100% confidence, I am happy that hippies are heavily involved in the craft scene. They actually take stances against huge environmental issues that can affect how the quality of beer is produced and are constantly taking advanced steps in sustainability to help thrust the industry in the proper direction.

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake, son.

Homebrewers unite, under the ever watchful eye of John Palmer!

I think a well kept secret in the homebrewing community is the fact that there is a famous member of the AHA and writer named Michael Jackson.

Great post Eddie. As an update to that video confessional, the guy ended up pleading not guilty in front of a judge, throwing everyone for a loop and forcing them to go to trial. Pretty shitty thing to do, since the video actually seemed to be an honest attempt to right a huge wrong. Actions didn't match up to words. Here's the link to the article: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/11/20440595-despite-viral-video…

He did lawyer up, but as I heard it wasn't a surprise.

I don't know the technicalities, but he plead not guilty in the preliminary hearing the other day. He is expected to actually plead guilty in a week or two. By the description, it sounded like this may allow them to work on a plea deal to reduce jail time.

Disclosure: this is all per some dope I heard describing it on the radio.

Wow. That's really disappointing. Guess he lawyered up.

Apparently the judge was not happy about his video confession and he was afraid the judge would throw the book at him if he pled guilty. By pleading not guilty he will get a new judge for his actual trial in which case he will change his plea to guilty and hope his new judge is more lenient.

Either way this all smells like an underhanded attempt to beg for mercy.

Does anyone know the specifics before his confession? Was it a unsolved hit and run with no leads, or was he just days away from getting caught and then made the video?

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

I've seen Dick hanging around WSO recently, making a come back.
