Boutique trend: lots of older, more experienced people as VPs, younger, middle-aged as directors?

I hope I'm not coming out of left field with this - and its not that I usually see this - but it is not uncommon for me to look at boutique firms and see that the Managing Directors are significantly younger than a lot of the VPs. Has anyone else noticed this?

Is this because the older guys are near retirement and they shift over/down to VP to travel less and take on less work? And I don't really think the VPs make that much less in terms of pay, the argument is more about work capacity. Thoughts?

jasper90a lot of the firms I see have a huge age gap, except the MDs are like 60+ and analyst and associates under 30. Most MDs I see are partners in the firm and were ex-MDs at top BBs

u have lots of people in late 40's/early 50's like moelis who have struck out to be their own bosses/MDs/partners no?
