brand more important then type of work

What are your thoughts wrt the brand of the IB compared to the quality of work that you are given? If given the choice between a BB doing pitchbook/modelling/regular stuff vs a non-BB (but good boutique) doing investments, what's your logic in picking either one? Obviously if you go with the BB the branding is better and you can jump to a bigger job, but the good boutique gives you the chance to build a new product/start a new desk/more hands on investment valuation.

I guess this is a traditional brand vs work question.

I'm asking with the intention of starting my own firm in 10 years. Currently a 2nd year analyst.

The above advice is good for someone who wants to be a career banker, but if you want to go to PE/HF you should be able to do that in much less that 5-10 years, especially if you are a top analyst/associate.

Now, to the brand vs. work experience thing. Clearly the best situation is to get good experience at a big name shop, but if it seems like you are going to have to choose one or the other I think what is best really depends on your personality. If you do not have good salesmanship skills, go with the biggest name you can get. If you can do a good job of selling your experiences and skills in an interview, then consider taking the better work experience.

I have seen people come from both backgrounds into top notch jobs.
