Build family business or try and go back to investment banking?

So I was recently laid off from a boutique investment bank in m&a. I just graduated business school and was only there as an analyst for about 5 months. It's been about 4 weeks since the lay off and have now been offered to work for the family business. The family business is essentially a financial technology consulting business. It's doing 1M in EBITDA, and is doing advisory work for financial technology companies who are interested in IPOS, Capital raising, Venture funding, expanding products and services, etc. it's industry focused and rapidly growing. It’s small, I can’t lie but growing. Clients are well funded start ups and Fortune 500 companies. My family gave me an offer that is paying me a bit more than my IB job. It's remote, and pays a bit better. It's more senior too. In the long run, I want to know which one would be better for me. The state of the market isn't helpful and being unemployed for too long would hurt my resume, but now I have an opportunity to make more money and learn a new and growing industry. What are your thoughts. Should i do this and forget about IB and grow this?

By family, do you mean immediate or extended? It’s a good deal on paper, but I’d caution making that choice if you have even the slightest of doubts of the relationship with your family.

Once you’re under their thumb, saying no to demands they make on your life suddenly becomes that much harder, and it’s worse than a regular employer because they can play the family card + is literally your boss. Call me cynical but it’s a scenario I’ve seen played out

Working for parents can be hard. Is the business named after your family? You'll be seen as a nepotism baby in interviews. Is your dad going to be your reference for future stuff? That is a hard sell imho.

If you happen not to take it, I would definitely appreciate if you could send it over to me

So family business. I had terrible experience where my family registered a company , using family sharing feature to steal my phone contents and data, that included confidential working database and intellectual property related data for selling as their company business nature, without telling me anything, resulted breach of data , termination of my ex employment, blacklisted by industry , and those local tech team taught my parents to push all responsibility to me just to make sure their practices to harvest industry data is still operational to develop their automation solutions.

That’s evil, irresponsible. And thanks to this incident, I learned GDPR, and read many cybersecurity just to prevent this from occurring again.

Perhaps it’s only my personal terrible and traumatic experience caused my unfavorable opinion to family business. Unless your family members are at the same level and same business goal, otherwise they would just be the cybercrime tools that are used by local tech firms to launch “love scams, family scams, and other relationships scams” attack to harvest learning data for their ML AI at minimum costs.

Because of this, I had disconnected and untied relationships with my family to prevent them from launching another “fake parental control” to steal my phone data.

Trust me, when comes to data selling, they will never be honest, and always lie and gaslight people about their wrongdoing.

So, family business, parental control, and social caring network had caused the disconnection and untied relationships between me and my family.

That’s my personal tragedies experience about this article.
