Busier as you get better ?

Hi all,

Basically my issue is this - I am A3 now, and I feel like over the past couple months I’ve been busier and busier, basically I don’t struggle until 3am because I am lost with something like a new joiner, but rather I do things more efficiently so just got more things added to my plate.

Even on pitches, people would expect me to turn 30-page pitch books in 1-2 days and we just have more iterations. I try to push back but sometimes people just stick to bullshit deadlines and we just all finish late.

So basically even if I finish earlier than in my first year, I am basically going from one rush to the next. And even more, most of the Asso/VPs know I can do stuff independently so will just outsource most of the work and just give a 30s look and say good to go (sometimes they won’t even look, which I don’t mind because I finish earlier but that doesn’t feel fair) especially if I get junior analysts to support, then the Asso will just tel me what to do and I will create the whole deck basically.

This is a bit of an issue in terms of interview prep as well because I have no downtime to prep.

Anyone facing the same issue ?

It sounds like they're treating you like an associate and that's where the expectations are. I know the workload sucks, but I think this is a good thing for you.

To manage the workload, my suggestion is to start acting like one. Delegate delegate delgate and focus on planning/oversight/checking rather than actually rolling up your sleeves and leading the charge on putting pen to paper. It's really difficult to do both without sacrificing quality or your sanity.

Have your associate/VP bless the delegation, I don't see why they wouldn't given you're taking a lot of load off them. I do this with my guys and am very clear as to I don't care who they delegate because I trust them to oversee and be accountable for whatever comes to me.

Yep that’s actually a really good point - the painful part of when I have to both create and review. But when I just review and outsource the creating part my life gets better.

The only issue with outsourcing to A1s is that they’re very slow / make a bunch of random mistakes you wouldn’t think is possible - but guess it will improve

They will, it's just the way of the world. I work directly with a lot of A1s and even though they absolutely hate it, I find it helps to be very very specific in my instructions - this graph goes here, match the size, title should be x etc. Have only had to do it maybe two or three times before they get the memo and understand. They really just need guidance as to expectations, as did we all when we started.
