Buyside Equities/Long-Only to Investment Banking?
Recently graduated and started at a midwestern long-only as an associate with no specific coverage. A few weeks in, I realize this isnt what I want to do. In college, I did a boutique IB internship (no name) before interning at a small sell side research shop (non-NYC). I realized that I want to pivot into IB in NYC. How doable is this if I craft my story right? Getting paid street right now so it isn't like I am doing this for the money, its more for the role itself.
Transitioning from a buyside equities/long-only role to investment banking (IB) in NYC is challenging but not impossible, especially if you craft your story effectively. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider:
Leverage Your Existing Experience:
Your background in buyside equities, sell-side research, and boutique IB gives you a foundation to build on. Highlight transferable skills such as financial modeling, valuation, and market analysis. Emphasize how these skills align with the demands of IB.
Crafting Your Story:
Your narrative is critical. Focus on why IB is the right fit for you and how your current role has helped you realize this. Avoid framing it as dissatisfaction with your current job; instead, position it as a natural progression toward your long-term career goals. For example, you could say that while your current role has provided valuable insights, you’re drawn to the deal-making, client-facing, and fast-paced nature of IB.
Targeting the Right Firms:
Breaking into a top-tier NYC IB from your current position might be tough, but middle-market (MM) or boutique banks could be more accessible. These firms often value diverse backgrounds and may provide a stepping stone to larger banks later.
Networking:
Networking will be your most powerful tool. Reach out to alumni, former colleagues, or professionals in IB who have made similar transitions. Attend industry events, leverage LinkedIn, and request informational interviews to build connections and gain referrals.
Demonstrate Commitment:
Be prepared to prove your interest in IB during interviews. Study technicals thoroughly, stay updated on M&A deals, and be ready to discuss why you’re making the switch. Showing over-the-top eagerness and preparation can help offset any perceived gaps in your background.
Consider an MBA:
If direct entry proves difficult, pursuing an MBA at a top-tier program could be a viable route. Many MBA programs provide strong access to NYC IB roles, and your buyside experience would be a valuable differentiator in recruiting.
Timing and Persistence:
The earlier you start, the better. Recruiting cycles for IB are structured, so timing your outreach and applications is crucial. Persistence and resilience will be key, as breaking into IB from a non-traditional background often requires multiple attempts.
While the path may not be straightforward, with the right strategy and effort, transitioning into IB in NYC is achievable.
