Calgary Energy Investment Banking

Folks - my baby brother studying in London is deciding between 3 energy shops in Calgary (TPH, TD and RBC). Any recent insights on their culture will be appreciated?

I had IB offers from a few shops in Calgary but am working in Toronto due to family reasons so perhaps I can provide some brief insight. RBC is king in Calgary in terms of experience and deal flow, but the culture is horrible. There's literally a 300 comment thread on here that you can read about all the stuff that goes down there but some of the first/second hand stories I've heard are even worse. However, I also heard that they are now trying to clean up the culture but its still a major sweatshop.

TD is more chill but still has decent deal flow. Seems to have one of the best work life balances of all Canadian banks. Also heard good things about TPH given that they are now under the PWP umbrella and I know they recruit super early.

The culture at RBC has not changed and it will never change until there is a complete overhaul/restructuring of leadership.  Any “attempts” to change the culture are for optics only.  The level of turnover by experienced staff over the last 3-4 years has been astronomical because the culture remains toxic/abusive, seniors are fucking insane and the hours are 24/7.   Things just keep on getting worse because the office is now filled with a bunch of inexperienced juniors who don’t know what the fuck is going on with no one experienced to teach them. It’s  a shit show. Everyone is just trying to survive until they can exit after bonus season or the job market shifts.  Tell your bro to apply to TD or TPH. Both are good options.

Good point. The sexual assault charges were completely hushed. Staff were told not to talk about it whatsoever with anyone including family. The matter was not handled well.  A VP was also fired related to the charges and staff were told not to talk.
