Call with Top BB IBD Global Head
I was wondering what are some good questions to ask to hopefully leave a good impression or even impress him without coming off as fake. I truly am interesting in banking, but I feel like I may get overly nervous and come off robotic or fake, so I was wondering what would be some good points to go over or ask about other than his background and how he got to where he is today. I've had a couple informational interviews with alums before, but no one at this level.
Background: Rising Junior at target with prior boutique IB experience, search fund experience and current PE experience. Assistant asked for resume for him to read before call. He is an alum.
Talk with him in the same way that you would talk with your buddy that is a first year analyst. You're overthinking it.
More gentle strokes, less suction.
lol
first off, let him call you, you don't call him. You're taking time out of your schedule to speak to him, act accordingly. Then, make sure he understands you're going into investment banking strictly for exit opportunities, not in it for the long haul. You strictly work from 9-5, and won't settle for anything more. Bring up the crisis a lot and how he probably was at the forefront for what made the market collapse. Lastly, It is IMPERATIVE you cut him off and tell him you need to go. "I started my career in banking when-" "Oh damn, I need to go. position is tanking, need to get out. Text me with offer"
In all seriousness, treat the guy like you would treat a friend 15 years in the future. Draw personal connections, he chose to speak with you because of a personal connection, not because you're the first kid to email him with a relevant major and knowledge of capital markets. Ask him why he chose the career path he's on, and any advice in specific to the school you go to.
First, stop saying rising anything. I know it gets you students off to be able to write or say that, but trust me the associates and analysts who you actually work with do not really care. Unless you're a going to graduate at the top of your entire class and/or have helped with the curing of a cancer all while running multiple real and impactful student body organizations, you are not a rising anything. You're just a normal hardworking student who wants to break into high finance.
If you're genuinely interested in investment banking, then show it. Ask follow up questions, try to understand him as a person and why he was so successful as an investment banker.
What does this even mean? Rising denotes that you're in the summer before the year you're listing, not sure how that comes across as douchey. Yeah look at me I took the requisite number of credit hours to now be considered a junior at my school.
What are you talking about? As LongIslandBound said, thats all that rising means. I am in between sophomore and junior year.
