Caltech Student Interested in Healthcare IB & Consulting

Hi all,

I was wondering about people's thoughts on IB (and MBB) recruiting from Caltech. I'm currently a freshman there and interested in Healthcare IB or Consulting with hopes of going into VC later down the line. Most people here that are interested in finance go into Quant, and while we place very well, I simply can't picture myself doing quant long term. From what I know is most who wanted an MBB offer got one, although I know nothing about IB recruiting as it seems barely anyone has gone through the process.

I've searched this forum but I haven't seem to have found anything definitive and was looking for further insights.

I was wondering if I could place into top firms for internships & FT as long as I network, learn technicals etc, since for OCR, there are only quant firms.

I'm sure you would do great. The key thing will be finding a mentor to help you navigate the process. Leverage any family/high school/random connections or follow up with people you network with and particularly like.

Caltech will get you in the door, particularly for SF healthcare groups and West Coast MBB I'd imagine, but you will need to network hard.

School location can help because while all top schools have national brands, you typically get a bit of a boost in a place where a lot of alumni are (even if none are at your target firm).

Also, you might be asked (or it may be in the back of someone's head) why [location] and being able to speak to how you enjoyed living in Pasadena, weather etc. can help demonstrate interest/break the ice. This also applies if you grew up in the Bay Area say.

Not the biggest factor, but it can help you out.
