Capital Markets SA to M&A FT?

Hey everyone,

I'm a junior at an Ivy who's going to be interning at GS in a Financing aka Capital Markets Group this summer. Obviously haven't started the internship yet so I might end up liking it, but as for now, I have my heart set on an industry/M&A experience for FT.

What are my chances of getting FT interviews at EBs and at other BBs for industry groups? What are some things that I should be doing now to prepare for the FT recruiting process? Since Capital Markets is housed within the investment banking division at Goldman, would doing internal mobility to an industry group be easier or harder than trying to score an offer from a different firm? Thanks for any help you guys can offer!

Addressing the first question (chances of getting FT interviews), you should have no problem getting interviews at most of the EBs/BBs. If they see Goldman they will at least hear you out. The one caveat is that you have to get a return offer, or they will be less inclined to listen.

Second question (what you should be doing), like I said, the biggest thing is to get the return offer. If you do not get a return offer people most likely won't even care why not (they will assume). Also, start reaching out now to those other firms that you are looking at. Then in the fall (once you got the return offer), reach back out and say "Hey I got a return offer to Goldman, but I like your firm better. Are you hiring in xx group for FT?"

Last question, as the other person said, Goldman is known for having pretty good mobility (ie. if you are good they want to keep you regardless of what capacity). That being said, I know that it can sometimes take a while (as in 2-3 years maybe). Also, this option requires you obtaining the return offer.

As you can see, pretty much everything is going to hinge on the return offer. If you get it, you'll be fine and have an abundance of options. If not, it could be a long year.
