Chances to get FT in IB coming from well-known University but having studied Economics?

Hey WSO community!

I will be pretty brief:

  • economics background in one of the best EU universities (Bocconi University);

  • internships in well-known and prestigious places but not in IB: European Commission, Embassy of Italy (economic office), Mediobanca (research center of this Italian bank);

  • already graduated (MSc), in October 2018

How many chances do I have to get a FT position in IB? Is it true that I can only apply for FT positions given that I already have a degree?

Thanks in advance guys and happy New Year !! :)

No, you can also apply to internships and there are plenty of firms out there (boutique and large) that offer them. If you aren't feeling too confident I would apply to FT at boutiques/MMs and internships at BBs. It also depends if you are planning on working in London or Milan (the former is more competitive than the latter, in which case I would suggest an internship first).

I am still in my Economics Bachelor at one of the best universities for Economics in the EU and got an internship at a BB in S&T in London (I had previous experience in banking). I think that your chances are pretty good based on your resume! Make sure you submit a good application. You should tell them that you understand finance (maybe you were in a student society or you had good grades in finance classes) but dont shy away from telling them what qualities you bring as an economist! All economists I have met during recruitng were always excited to meet a fellow (upcoming) economist.

Good Luck!
