Changing Story With Headhunters

I work at a boutique in a major US city and am planning to lateral to a BB or elite boutique. I met with some of the major headhunter firms earlier this year and said I wanted to do buyouts, but got very little interest (except in growth equity) since I work at a non-target firm. Was wondering if it makes sense to reach out to those headhunters and let them know I'm interested in lateraling, or if that will backfire and turn them off completely when I'm in the market for buyout positions again a year from now. Thoughts on if this is a good idea and how to structure the message?
