Choosing Groups for the Summer

Secured an internship with a BB this summer and will soon go through group placements. If my goal is middle market PE/VC, should I aim for the "top group" at the firm or choose a group of my interest where I get along with the analysts? Which sets me up better in the long run? I've been told both by different people, but curious to hear any thoughts or stories on this.

Kind of depends on further specificity... but I'll answer given the info I have. 1st off it depends on the bank. At a GS/JPM etc BB people over group every day (as long as it is not a notably shitty group) if your aim is MM PE. At a "lower tier" BB (whatever tf that means) group is important and will determine what kind of looks you get. I'd aim for a combination of solid group, decent work, and good people. Don't need to go to the banks top group, but also don't go to a ghost town. Hope that helps!
