Citi versus Evercore both London

Hi Monkeys,

I received 2 FT offers as Analyst 1 in London IBD: - Evercore - Citi

Very difficult for me to choose.

I know Evercore is very strong in the US, but not really in Europe (top 12-20) where as Citi is a bit better (top 6-7). I have no guarantees for the team I will join (and it seems difficult to ask).

In terms of fit, I would say equal.

What are you thoughts?

Thx

First of all, I don't think that you should look at league tables to make a decision - especially when it comes to a boutique vs. a BB: they don't do the same number of deals, and they don't have the same number of employees, so it is not comparable.

In my opinion, both are great options and it comes down to the Boutique vs. BB question. The BB will provide you with more training, a more structured platform and maybe a bigger name outside of finance. The elite boutique would give you a very different experience. There are a lot of threads on the topic.

Something worth considering: from what I saw on LinkedIn, Evercore has a rotational programme where you can work first in a product team and then in an industry team. That might be very cool to decide on which one you prefer, and it clearly limits the chances of being pigeonholed in a group you don't like.

Personally, I would probably choose Citi, and try to get in the best team. My short-term objective is not to get straight into PE, and I believe that a Bulge Bracket is always a safer bet (that's my opinion). Furthermore, if down the line you want to join a boutique after 1-2 years in a BB, it should be relatively easy. In terms of PE exit I don't know which one is the best.

Thx a lot Aliasgoldman.

I would add that my objective is clearly to exit in PE as soon as possible. What would offer me the better exit ops, Citi or Evercore?

In addition, you said that if went to Citi I could easily go to a Boutique after. This is not right on the other side, from EB to BB?

On the exit ops point, I'm not sure. From what I have read in the US Evercore > Citi for PE exits. For London I would lean towards Citi as they are way more established in Europe, but overall I don't think that the difference is significant. Would be great if someone from Evercore / Citi could give his insight.

For the EB > BB, I have not seen many doing the move, but it might just be because analysts are happy to stay in boutiques, if staying in banking.
