Closing An Interview
What's a good way to close an interview for an internship. What would be a good way to express interest and thank the individual.
I do the usual, "thanks for your time, looking forward to hearing from you"
Do any of you have recommendations for alternate effective ways?
Is it unprofessional to ask "when a decision would be made" or just follow up the following day to thank them?
Thanks
When I did it (and it was a long time ago), I asked my interviewer what sort of project/deals he/she is working on now. Just try to make yourself sound unique. 1-2 more questions from you should be enough.
As for your last question, usually the decision time is stated clearly on their recruiting post. I think sending a follow-up letter is important.
I would second Brown_Bateman's words. Play it safe at the end and try to ask simple yet sincere questions. There are far too many OTHER chances in your interview to shine. Don't put too much energy into thinking of creative questions or ways to close to interview. Just shake hands and say thank you at the end. It should be expected by the end that you have already properly conveyed your interest and desire for the position.
Guys, I sorta disagree. I believe in throwing the ball down field if you know what I mean, and I'm confident this helped get me a BB job last year. A good way to do this is to say, "Based on our conversation, do you think that my background would be a good fit for a FT/SA role at x firm?" Or "After speaking with so many great people at x firm, I know this would be the ideal place for me to start my career. What are the next steps in the recruiting process? Do you think we can move ahead with consideration for my application" There are lots of ways to do this artfully.
In a practical sense, I would also recommend asking for feedback. If you are interviewing at one of these places, chances are you'll have many other interviews at the same firm and at others. So asking for live feedback will help. This is a good segue into discussing next steps, etc. Even if you DON'T get invited back, reach out to your interviewers again to ask for their input about your options. Chances are they know a million people who can help you, or they can pass on other good advice. And it's a given you MUST write a thank you note immediately afterwards. If it has one mistake, you're dead.
Bottom line is few people actually close--i.e. asking for the job. In fact, on SunTrust's recruiting website they encourage you to ask for the job. I would venture to say if you DON'T close for a sales job, then that's a negative on you. Caveat is don't be obnoxious about it, show genuine interest in the firm and the work, and don't exude that your motivation for getting the job is prestige/better exit opps than doing something else.
