Coffee-Chats Follow Up

Hey everyone

I’ve had a few coffee chats with bankers recently, and something keeps happening: toward the end of the conversation, they’ll offer to connect me with someone else (even before I ask), and say something like, “Send me a thank you note and I’ll make the intro.” I always follow up with a thank-you email the same day — but the intro never comes.

Should I follow up again and ask about the connection? If so, how would you phrase it without sounding pushy?

Also, more broadly — what do you think are the best ways to follow up after coffee chats to keep the momentum going?

current student, sent out many emails, to be honest i fully lost count of the amount of times someone said follow up and ill make the intro and never did, happened a lot. but i would always follow up a week later, keeping it short and simple:

"hi Name,

I hope you're enjoying the day. I was wondering if you've had a chance to take a look at the email that I sent to you.

I understand that you're busy but would love to know if you have any recommendations for people that I could speak with. Thanks again!"

would say 70-80% replied to the follow up, so IMO works for me, but obv might not work for everyone

On the last part, i think the best ways to follow up with someone after a chat would be personal connections (made through the convo) or updates in your process. Ex. i had a chat with someone who was looking forward to the superbowl (he bought tickets like 20 min before our chat), couple days after the game i followed up to keep the connection. Also, updated ppl if i got first rounds or spds with their firm.

but i am just a student and don't really know what bankers actually want, this is j what worked for me

might be the way you're wording your thank you email? the way I like to approach it, especially if they're the ones that offered is to write something along the lines of towards the end of my thank you email:

"I know towards the end of the conversation, you mentioned about making an introduction. I'd love to see if you'd be willing to connect me with someone from ----. Thanks again for all of your help! I sincerely appreciate it!"

be specific in who you'd want them to connect you with but I've never outright just gave them a name from what I saw on LinkedIn but more so like a IB group or something. hope that was somewhat helpful!
