Comments on Lazard Houston
Can anyone comment on this office? Specifically in terms of deal flow and whether it's a good place to start out as a summer analyst/analyst.
I know Houston rankings are very different from NY, and I haven't seen anything detailed or recent on them. I know Evercore, Barclays, Credit Suisse, RBC, Jefferies are top in Houston, but how does Lazard stack up?
Would you rather take an offer there or at a NY MM?
If you're not interested in O+G than NYC. Work is very technical.
As for Lazard, I know someone who likes it there, but slowish deal flow and not the best rep
I don't see why I wouldn't be interested in O+G, seems pretty cool. But I'm assuming the skillset gained there is transferable to a NY office or another industry down the road. How different can it be, it's still banking right?

I mean, ya, a pitchbook is a pitchbook wherever you go but E&P books are gonna be super technical with less commentary than your typical book. E&P modeling is also very unique, MLP modeling slightly more transferable but definitely still different.
OFS, OTOH, now that's transferable. Basically just O&G industrials.
I'm not qualified to talk about banking work, but if I've learned anything in my petroleum engineering classes it's that upstream O&G is weird, complicated, and involves a lot of uncertainties, and that's exactly why I love energy. It would make sense for the O&G banking work to be a little wonky too.
Interesting. Why does Evercore Houston send so many analysts to megafunds and non-O&G PE then? I know they placed 2 at Blackstone NY last year (out of a class of 8 or so). If the skills are transferable to PE it must be transferable to non-O&G IB amiright
You sure that was non-O&G at BX?
Nevertheless, EVR is the top shop right now and they're on everything OFS and midstream and do enough E&P work. OFS is definitely transferable and midstream isn't too different but if you go to an upstream shop like Scotia or Jefferies then that'd be pretty tough to go generalist.
