Conferences and networking events

I guess this probably applies more to those of you in the buyside, but how often do you guys attend conferences and networking events for work? Have you made useful contacts through them?

The buyside doesn't need to network nearly as much/at all compared to the sell-side. This goes double in the S&T realm.

Conferences are a different story. As an analyst or PM (talking asset management here) you could be at a different one practically every week if you wanted to, regardless of sector. Aside from getting out of the office, these are primarily opportunities to meet with comp. mgmt. etc.
